2. Problem Definition

Takatuf have introduced a program for project management development and invited 25 participants from 9 different companies. The program started with 5 face to face training, in which the 25 participants “ Takatuf PMI 2014” Team had to work together as a team to deliver certain deliverables.

The first assignment is to apply Dr. Bruce Tukman theory of group development, to the newly formed “ Takatuf PMI 2014”  team to explore where they fall in the different stages, and therefore to reach to a conclusion on the best leadership style that the leader need to adopt.

2. Development of the feasible alternatives

Based on the group development theory, there are 4 different stages that this group may fall into. Forming, Storming, Norming or Performing.  In 1977, Tukman and Jensen added a fifth stage called adjourning, where the group work ends.

Below figure 1, illustrates the different key stages and describe the tasks and behaviors associated with each stage.

3. Possible solution / alternative

Questionnaire based on Donald Clark work was used and filled by 22 participants from “ Takatuf PMI 2014” Team. It is reflected in the below table 1:

4. Selection of Criteria

Based on the analysis in table 1 using Delphi technique with P90 , the results reflect that “ Takatuf PMI 2014 “ Team is in Performing Stage.

5. Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative

In different stages of the team progress i.e. forming, storming, norming and performing, different leadership style are recommended to use. Work that have been done by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard on situational leadership explained when to use different leadership style i.e telling, selling, participating, and delegating. Below figure 2 reflects Hersey and Blanchard Situational Leadership Model.

6. Selection of the Preferred Alternative.

Based on the stage that the “ Takatuf PMI 2014” Team, which is Performing stage, its recommended that they use delegation style .

7. Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result.

Delegating style is recommended to be used in “ Takatuf PMI 2014”  as the results indicated that they are at performing stage. This leadership approach is often used when the team has high level of willingness and ability. More trust and less supervision are needed in this group. The team needs to feel that they are empowered and competent enough to perform with minimal supervision. The tasks need to be delivered with minimal follow up, knowing that acceptable or even excellent results will be achieved.

    Just for the future, you need to think about posting early in the week so that if you do get a rejection there is plenty of time to fix it before the deadline to claim earned value for that week.
