  1)      Problem definition

Takatuf introduced Project Management Development Program (Takatf14). The first week of the program was face to face intensive workshops. The program consists of members from different companies who barely knew each other. In order for this team to start the project and face the challenges, leadership style need to be decided and agreed by the team.

2)   Feasible alternatives

Tuckman (1965) discovered that teams normally go through five stages of growth: Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. These stages are highly relevant to matrix teams since they may be highly diverse in culture [1].



Forming: In this stage, team members are introduced. They state why they were chosen or volunteered for the team and what they hope to accomplish within the team. Members cautiously explore the boundaries of acceptable group behavior. This is a stage of transition from individual to member status, and testing the leader’s guidance both formally and informally.

Storming: The team’s transition from the “As-Is” to the “To-Be” is called the Storming phase. All members have their own ideas as to how the process should look, and personal agendas are often rampant. Storming is probably the most difficult stage for the team. They begin to realize the tasks that are ahead are different and more difficult than they previously imagined. Impatient about the lack of progress, members argue about just what actions the team should take. They try to rely solely on their personal and professional experience and resist collaborating with some of the team members.

Norming: The Norming phase is when the team reaches a consensus on the “To-Be” process. Everyone wants to share the newly found focus. Enthusiasm is high, and the team is often tempted to go beyond the original scope of the process. During this stage, members reconcile competing loyalties and responsibilities. They accept the team, ground rules, roles, and the individuality of fellow members. Emotional conflict is reduced as previously competitive relationships become more cooperative.

Performing: By now the team has settled its relationships and expectations. They can begin performing by diagnosing, problem solving, and implementing changes. Team members have discovered and accepted other’s strengths and weakness. In addition, they have learned what their roles are.


3)      Developments of the outcomes of the alternative

In order for the team to identify in what stage they currently are. A survey to be conducted using Donald Clark [2].

The survey is used to determine in which stage the project fall. The following table represents the final results of the survey:

4)      Selection of the criteria

It is important to think about what future events may impact your project. The Delphi Technique is a method used to estimate the likelihood and outcome of future events [3]. Using Delphi Technique with P (90) for the results shown in Table.1.

5)      Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative

It is Clear from Table.2 that the team in the Performing Stage. It also noticed that the first three stages’ readings are close to each other. This might give the project manager an idea that the team have some difficulties to move from the first three stages to the performing stage or that the answers that were given is not correctly answers to reflect the current progress of the project.


6)      Selection of the Preferred Alternative.

It is obvious from the results shown on Table.2 that the team is in the performing Stage.


7)      Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result

Project Manager needs to enhance and make sure all the team’s members move to the current stage. He might conduct the survey periodically to check the progress and make sure that the members grow and perform at the same platform. By knowing the Team Progress and periodically check the progress will make a better understanding of the project and will help the team to mitigate any challenges and have a better understanding of the current states.

  1. Dr. Paul,

    I did a mistake by editing the same old blog W1 instead of re-blogging it. i just post W1.1 and hopefully this one will be much better.
    I also posted W3 blog earlier today and am working on my W2 blog, which i did not submit so far. Am expecting to post it by tomorrow to catch up with others.
