  1. Problem Definition.

A PMI competency development course commenced at Muscat on May 2015, with 25 participants from Oman. The course is broadly divided into face to face sessions as well as 12-week distance learning mode.

Since there have been several non-performing individuals within PMI-Takatuf Team, especially in blog posting assignment, it was decided to do the Tuckmen assessment, using Mode and Median this time instead of average, to see how results might change.

  1. Identify the Feasible Alternative.

In his article “Development Sequence in Small Groups”, published in 1965, Dr. Bruce described the path that most teams follow on their way to high performance. The model consists of four stages. These are Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. Leadership style of strategies of each one these stages are illustrated in Table1 below.

  1. Development of the Outcome for Alternative

The team members assessed themselves, in terms of what stage or phase of Tuckman’s module they think they are, by answering 32 questions developed by Donald Clark. Survey results processed via PERT analysis using Mode and Median, instead of average, and results are shown in Tables 2 and 3.

  1. Selection of the Acceptable Criteria.

A confidently level of 95% was selected as it is essential for team leaders to identify exactly what sort of management style should be implemented and spot any flaws in the team’s performance.

  1. Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative.

Table2 indicates that team is either in Forming or Storming, and Mode is not applicable for Norming and Storming because only six members participated in the survey and none number occurred twice.

Table3, shows that, for Median, team is in forming stage.

  1. Selection of the Preferred Alternative.

From the discussion above, and unlike Norming stage concluded by using average, team is probably in Storming stage and this is obvious from delayed submissions in, pretty much, all projects and Managerially-involved stages of explanation can be an appropriate.

  1. Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result.

A more frequent managerial-level intervention (Program Managers) should have been implemented during the 12-week distance learning, whether by de-scoping or firing non-performers.

  1. Awesome job Saaed!!! Nice selection of your case study and your analysis was also very well done!!!

    VERY IMPORTANT that you capture these “lessons learned” and apply them to your real projects.

    What would be an interesting assessment is to take your core team on a real project or program and conduct a Tuckman Assessment on one of your REAL TEAMS. This tool/technique is not a theoretical approach used by academics. This is a real life, day to day tool we can and should be implementing in our day to day working environment.

    If you have a team, why not try it out and post those results?
