With reference to my w12 & w3.1 posted blog Cost Estimation for a Maintenance Project, my company encountered leak in fire water pond. The fire water pond bottom material is rubber liner. It is proposed to do permanent solution to overcome the problem for ever. The solution is to make the bottom of the pond concrete instead of existent rubber liner. In the previous blog(w3.1) cost estimation done for the project. In this blog project duration will be estimated using Three Point Estimate method with Probability of 95.

W10 _Said Alamri_ Investment Decision based on NPV (part two: IRR, ERR&MARR Comparison)


1. Problem Recognition

With reference to my posted W9 _ Investment Decision based on NPV, management decided to invest 60000 OMR. There were two options: the first option has a return on investment with 1500 OMR per month for 10 years. Second option has return of investment with 3000 OMR per month for 5 years. Both investments have same discount rate of 7%. The second option with five years intervals was selected to be the best investment for that particular situation. In this blog I will do the calculation for IRR,ERR for each investments and verify if the selected investment is still valuable after determining IRR&ERR for the investments and compare it with MARR calculated from W5_AlShehhi [2].

Car tyres factory is designed to produce 900 tyre per day. Although the number of tyres rejected by quality control section due to manufacturing defect are recorded in daily production for a month of August around 340 tyres. The QC department wants to draw a control chart to present the values to management. After that the management can take action to purchase tyres recycling machine. And determine the machine capacity that will be purchased.

Management decided to use Internal Rate Return (IRR) and Net Present Value (NPV) to decide which option is worth to invest in? Management want to know the profitability of which investment is most attractive.

Board of directors of LPG plant wants to increase plant production. The engineering consultant gave two options: buy additional machines and production will increase by 60% with cost 20M$ US dollars or upgrade the old machines to increase the production by 30% with cost of 7M$ US dollars. Expected monetary value will be used to decide which option to be considered. Taking in consideration the risk of market demand for LPG.

This post will estimate the schedule for a maintenance project for fire water pond leakage which posted in my previous blog W3.1. The critical path is civil works for concreting the pond. In similar project the civil engineer is estimating the time required to do such task based on his experience. Even though expert judgments is an acceptable tool to estimate schedule I will incorporate PERT method with P90 will to estimate the time required to complete the critical path.

In my company we encountered leak in fire water pond. Divers were hired for under water inspection to identify the source of leak. After each repair still the water level goes down which indicates the leak is persist. The fire water pond bottom material is rubber liner. It is proposed to do permanent solution to overcome the problem for ever. The solution is to make the bottom of the pond concrete instead of existent rubber liner. In this blog am going to do cost estimation for the project. The project will be executed in house and we have to make back up plan for fire water network system during the repair of the water pond. We have to arrange alternative arrangement by utilizing the adjacent storm water sump through installing rental pumps to make the system available in case of emergency.\ Continue reading
